Dr. Suess’ Birthday

Happy Birthday, Dr. Suess!

March 2nd is both Read Across America Day and Dr. Suess’s birthday.  I remember in elementary school that this was a major event in our classroom life.  The cafeteria served green eggs and ham, we read the famously characterized books, and plenty of students and teachers alike came in with their red and white striped hats.  There were dozens of Cat in the Hat impersonators on Dr. Suess Day!

Those activities created an excitement and anticipation about reading and united the student body in an effort to celebrate literacy.  That’s what we need to teach students with—activities that make them want to learn.  We need to teach that, after all, READING IS FUN!
